The humanitarian situation in Mexico is of increasing concern:
- As of 2017, 55.3 million Mexicans lived below the poverty line (The Borgen Project)
- Some 14,679 children and adolescents from Central America travelled through Mexico when migrating (Unicef, 2017)
- More than 30,000 children from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador were temporarily held in detention centres in Mexico (UNICEF, 2018)
Islamic Relief USA worked with local partners to provide stabilizing emergency aid to communities affected by the Tijuana earthquake. Construction of six transitional shelters took place to efficiently house families whose homes were completely destroyed. Throughout the project 1,500 families received tarpaulin and rope to help mitigate significant home damage.
