Humanitarian fast facts about Malaysia:

  • Poverty rates in Malaysia are among the world’s lowest (Borgen Project)
  • In 2014, unprecedented rainfall caused flooding not seen in decades in Malaysia
  • The areas of Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang were hit particularly hard
  • Nearly 250,000 people were affected or displaced by the 2014 flooding

Islamic Relief staff members in Malaysia reported floods swept through so fast that many locals were caught by surprise and could not salvage their belongings. Flooding even caused some areas, including parts of Kelantan to turn into immediate “islands,” cutting off residents from emergency assistance. Communications was also very bad, and many did not have access to gasoline.

IRUSA supported local Islamic Relief teams who moved quickly to provide aid to the survivors, but because of the nature of this emergency, local resources were enough. Islamic Relief offices around the world asked for support to provide more essential emergency aid to the survivors. At the projects completion, over 3,500 survivors received aid.

Sectors served throughout Asia: 2017 - 2019
