The scope of Somalia’s humanitarian crisis:
- 6.2 million people, or half the country’s population, require humanitarian assistance and protection. 3.3 million of those people require urgent, life-saving assistance. (World Health Organization, 2018)
- Over 1.5 million children require emergency nutrition and support. (UNICEF, 2018)
- Famine was declared in Somalia six years ago. Since then, over 260,000 people—more than half of whom are children—have died. (CARE International, 2018)
Somalia is one of the countries in East Africa that consistently experiences devastating flash flooding. Flooding in recent years has affected more than 600,000 people in various regions throughout the country.
Islamic Relief USA works to provide these vulnerable communities with emergency aid, along with much-needed humanitarian projects focused on livelihood, food security, children in need, water development, and education.
