Niger’s staggering humanitarian crisis in numbers:

  • In 2018, Niger overtook India as the country with the largest number of people living in extreme poverty. An estimated 87 million Nigerians, or half the country’s population, are living on less than $1.90 a day. (CNN, 2018)
  • Niger was ranked as the fifth poorest country in the world in 2018, based off of GDP. (USA Today, 2018)

Islamic Relief began working in Niger in 2005. Recent projects have focused on water and sanitation, poverty alleviation, and enhancing food security. The projects aim to combat these areas of need by providing the vulnerable communities served with the means and resources they need for improved livelihoods.
