Challenges in Mozambique in numbers:
- 54.7% of the country’s 21.4 million live below the national poverty line. (United Nations Development Programme, 2019)
- Approximately 70% of the population live in rural areas and are thereby susceptible to climatic challenges in the region, like droughts. (United Nations Development Programme, 2019)
- Over 380,000 children are at risk for severe acute malnutrition. (UNICEF, 2019)
Islamic Relief USA has worked to combat drought in Mozambique brought on by El Nino. IRUSA has worked to provide school-aged children with improved nutritional statuses and increased clean water and sanitation access. These efforts help to increase the presence of children in school.
