The scope of poverty in Malawi:
- One in four of the country’s 17.2 million live in extreme poverty (World Food Programme, 2018)
- 37% of children under 5 are stunted in their growth due to chronic malnutrition (World Food Programme, 2018)
Islamic Relief established an office in Malawi in 2006 in response to an official presidential request for international humanitarian support. Islamic Relief USA works to improve clean water access in the country by constructing and rehabilitating solar-powered water wells. These water wells positively impact communities in a variety of ways, including paving the way for better overall health, allowing children to go to school, and improving livelihoods.
